Facebook mobile app to offer free, limited Internet in Zambia.

Facebook Inc is launching a mobile app that gives users in Zambia free access to a handful of online services on mobile phones, broadening an effort to boost Internet usage in underdeveloped countries. The Internet.org app will offer, in partnership with wireless operator Airtel , more than a dozen services including online encyclopedia Wikipedia, websites devoted to weather, job listings and health information, as well as Facebook’s own social network and messaging service.

The app will be available in additional countries over the coming months and years, Guy Rosen, product management director for Facebook’s Internet.org effort said on Wednesday. Facebook will not pay Airtel for the bandwidth, Rosen said, but Airtel will benefit as users who are exposed to Internet services eventually decide to pay for broader, unrestricted access.

Access to the information on the app’s included services is free, but links that lead to information on other websites will require that users pay wireless data charges. The free version of Facebook in the app does not allow for the video playback.

Facebook has partnered with more than 150 wireless providers over the past four years to offer free or discounted access to its social network, but the new app in Zambia marks the first time the company has added Web services beyond its own social network to the menu of free services.

The move comes as Facebook steps up investments in its Internet.org project, which seeks to connect the “next 5 billion” users to the Internet, many of whom lives in places like Africa and India. In March Facebook announced plans to use drones and satellites to deliver Internet connectivity to people in certain parts of the world. The initiative has the potential to boost the size of Facebook’s audience, which currently totals 1.32 billion monthly users.

Jonathan tasks Immigration on professionalism, unveils new e-passport

President Goodluck Jonathan tasks Immigration on professionalism, unveils new e-passport.

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has challenged officers and men of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), especially those at the borders on projecting the country in a positive light by their conduct since they are the first contacts, adding that anything untoward leaves a permanent  impression in the minds of foreigners.

The President gave the charge Wednesday in Abuja while  formally unveiling the newly introduced 64-page Nigerian e-passport at the Council Chambers, Presidential Vila shortly before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council ( FEC).

The document, according to the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, was a  demand-driven initiative geared at enhancing the integrity of the country’s  travel papers as well as the  image of the Nigerian traveller anywhere in the world.

According to him, the idea was based on some recommendations arising from the operational experiences of the Nigeria Immigration Service, prompting the Ministry of Interior  to initiate reforms regarding the e-Passport, ultimately birthing the new  64-page document.

EBOLA "PREVENTIVE MEASURES"

West African countries announce new measures to stop Ebola spread.

Nigeria quarantines hospital and Liberia shuts borders but lack of resources and understanding fuels deadly outbreak

Authorities across west Africa have announced a series of measures aimed at stopping the spread of the Ebola virus, which reached a fourth country last week with a death in Lagos, Africa's most populous city.

Nigeria closed and quarantined the hospital where a man died on Friday in the country's first recorded case of the deadly and highly contagious pathogen.

The closure of the clinic in one of the city's most densely populated districts came as police were called in to guard Sierra Leone's main Ebola treatment centre, while Liberia shut almost all its borders and banned public gatherings. Attempts to halt the seven month-crisis, which has spiraled into the world's biggest and most widespread outbreak of Ebola, have been hampered by a lack of resources and poor understanding in a region which has never experienced an epidemic.

Ebola has killed 672 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since it was first diagnosed in February. The pathogen is passed through contact with bodily fluids of infected patients or eating infected meat, and has no known cure, although chances of survival improve dramatically with early detection and treatment.

Medical staff put on their protective gear in Sierra Leone

"We have shut the hospital to enable us to properly quarantine the environment. Some of the hospital staff who were in close contact with the victim have been isolated," Lagos state health commissioner Jide Idris said during a press conference on Monday.

Authorities set up an isolation ward and began tracing those who had been in contact with Patrick Sawyer, a 40-year-old civil servant whose flight from his home in Monrovia, Liberia's capital, stopped over in Togo and Ghana. Some 60 contacts had been traced, including 44 health workers and 15 airport officials. Not all of the flight's passengers had been contacted as the airline had yet to provide a manifest, state officials said.

Derek Gatherer, a virologist at the University of Lancaster, said anyone on the plane near the infected man could be in "pretty serious danger".

"It depends on how much damage this traveller has already done," he said.

But he said Nigeria was richer than the other countries in the region, so could more easily mobilise resources to tackle an outbreak. "Nigerians have deep pockets and they can do as much as any western country could do if they have the motivation and organisation to get it done."

Liberian and Nigerian airports and seaports began screening international arrivals for Ebola symptoms, which can take up to 21 days to appear. Arik Air, a major carrier for the region, has suspended flights between Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone, as travel peaks this week during the Muslim holiday of Eid.

The New BlackBerry Passport

You Would Be Needing A Passport For The New Blackberry!!!

 BlackBerry Passport Specs
The BlackBerry Passport uses a 4.5inch display with a 1440x1440 pixel resolution, which equates to 480 ppi. Under the hood there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8974 quad-core chip. We don't know precisely which chip just yet, but it does have an Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM, suggesting it is either a Snapdragon 800 or 801 setup.

The Passport is lighter than the BlackBerry Z30, and first look hands on demos show the handset on the top and bottom panels. There's also a non-removable 3,450mAh battery pack and Micro SD support. Meanwhile the rear-facing camera (with LED flash) is rated at 13MP, with a 2MP shooter on the front.

The big thing with the BlackBerry Passport, aside from its square design, is battery – initial tests of the handset show it can go around 15 hours from a single charge with middling-to-high usage. That’s impressive, and it could make for a HUGE USP for the Passport. We expect a big emphasis on this aspect at launch.

Beyond this the modus operandi behind the whole Passport campaign is likely to be productivity, security and the myriad improvements included inside the BB 10.3 Update. Things like: improved support for Android applications, tweaks to the UX, and, of course, Blackberry Assistant.

BlackBerry Passport Release Date And Price
BlackBerry has not discussed exact release dates for the BlackBerry Passport, although the company did say the handset would be available in stores during Q4, following a London launch in September.

Nothing is currently known regarding price, although based on the specs – which we’ll tackle below – it’s likely going to be a high-end affair with a £400+ price tag (#104,000 Naira)

Check out the Beautiful Pictures Below
